Tescos go ahead may cause Counciller to sell land.
Councillor Tim Ashton, of Ashtead has agreed to let developers buy part of his land to aid in the redesign of the Ashtead Peace Memorial car park, on Woodfield Lane if Tesco builds a store on the Street.
Tesco's plan for the new store was submitted to Mole Valley District council on August 1 st , after unveiling them during a three-day heated public consultation in June.
The villagers in Ashtead have not been content with the plans for the giant supermarket and Councillor Ashton admitted he only agreed to sell the land because he thought the supermarket built would be a Waitrose, which in the town is a ‘well-liked' supermarket. ‘I never thought it would be anything other than Waitrose and everyone seemed happy with them moving into the village so I could not believe it when Tesco bought the site.'
Councillor Ashton also said the plans to redevelop the car park to hold a total of 212 spaces would be a ‘benefit' to the village. He also added he had not attended any meetings with Tesco's and has not been involved in any of the planning process either.
